Robotic Knee Replacement

Knee replacement is commonly performed for arthritis of the knee that is affecting a patients quality of life and participation in daily activities.

The decision to proceed with a knee replacement is based on a combination of symptoms, examination findings, and X-rays showing the extent of joint damage.  It's very much a shared decision with Liam once conservative treatments have been exhausted.

The operation involves opening up the knee, and surgically removing the remaining cartilage and a small amount of bone from the knee, and replacing it with a metal and polyethylene "knee replacement" sized based on 3D templating  that have a proven track record.

Most patients spend 2 to 3 nights in hospital, then continue rehabilitation at home or with outpatient physiotherapy, focusing on regaining range of motion, rebuilding strength, and returning to walking and daily activities. While full recovery and final settling of the joint can take up to twelve months, the majority of patients notice substantial improvements in pain and mobility within the first six to twelve weeks.
